Introduction to Luminism
Luminism is a modern philosophical–contemplative tradition dedicated to awakening, wisdom, and union with Ultimate Reality. It brings together the experiential depth of Early Buddhism, the rational spirituality of Deism, and the metaphysical insight of Neoplatonism into a single, universal framework. Luminism is not a religion, institution, or creed; it is a disciplined path of illumination grounded in truth, virtue, and contemplative practice. Its aim is the transformation of the whole person—inner and outer—through wisdom, ethical action, and direct realization of the Unconditioned.
The Luminist Fifteen Principles articulate the core vision and commitments of this path. They define its understanding of reality, human nature, moral cultivation, contemplative life, and the process of liberation. Together, these principles form the foundation of Luminist thought and practice, guiding seekers toward clarity, freedom, and the realization of Ultimate Reality.
The Luminist Fifteen Principles
1. Luminism as a Path of Illumination
Luminism is a worldview of awakening to Ultimate Reality. Becoming a Luminist requires affirming these principles and committing to the path of illumination.
2. Decentralized Spiritual Freedom
Luminism has no clergy, churches, or central authority. It affirms dignity, conscience, and liberty. Luminists do not evangelize, discriminate, persecute, or coerce.
3. Universal Synthesis
Luminism integrates the deepest insights of contemplative traditions with science, psychology, and reason. It is an independent East–West synthesis adapted for the modern world.
4. Supremacy of Truth
Truth is the highest authority. It is discovered through experience, reason, and testimony. No scripture, teacher, or tradition is infallible.
5. Guides of Wisdom
Luminism honors the great sages of history as guides to awakening, without binding itself to any single lineage or canon.
6. Non‑Idolatry
Luminism rejects the worship of idols and avoids the use of images or statues in spiritual practice, focusing instead on inner illumination.
7. Ultimate Reality
Ultimate Reality is the unconditioned, ineffable, eternal Source of all that is. It is one, transcendent, and beyond personhood. Sages name it differently, but its nature is singular.
8. Cosmic Emanation
The cosmos is an interdependent process of energy, information, and motion emanating from Ultimate Reality. Consciousness evolves within this process and may return to the Unconditioned.
9. Human Nature
Human beings are composed of body, mind, and consciousness. The mind includes cognition, volition, and emotion, shaped by conditioning that influences thoughts, feelings, and choices.
10. Obscuration
Ignorance, attachment, and aversion obscure perception and generate suffering. All conditioned phenomena arise interdependently and are impermanent, unsatisfactory, and without inherent essence.
11. Intentional Action
Intentional action shapes the continuity of experience. Patterns of thought and behavior evolve until illumination dissolves obscuration.
12. Virtues of Luminosity
Luminists cultivate lovingkindness, compassion, justice, prudence, humility, equanimity, and moderation. Virtue is the natural expression of clarity.
13. Threefold Path
Luminism follows a threefold path of wisdom, ethics, and transformation. These include right view, right motivation, right speech, right action, right living, right self‑regulation, right mindfulness, and right meditation.
14. Contemplative Life
Luminism is a contemplative path. Practitioners cultivate silence, solitude, simplicity, study, reflection, and self‑examination.
15. Liberation
Liberation arises through moral purification, mental illumination, and existential clarity. The aim is union with Ultimate Reality—the end of conditioned becoming and the realization of Being.
