In the Early Evening

This devotion may be used before or after the evening meal.

O gracious Light,
23px spacerpure brightness of the
23px spacereverliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ,
23px spacerholy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
23px spacerand our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises O God:
23px spacerFather, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
23px spacerto be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
23px spacerand to be glorified through all the worlds.

A Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:5-6

It is not ourselves that we proclaim;
23px spacerwe proclaim Christ Jesus as Lord,
23px spacerand ourselves as your servants,
23px spacerfor Jesus’ sake.
For the same God who said,
23px spacer“Out of darkness let light shine,”
has caused his light to shine within us,
23px spacerto give the light of revelation–
23px spacerthe revelation of the glory of God
23px spacerin the face of Jesus Christ.

Prayers may be offered for ourselves and others.
The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
23px spacerhallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
23px spacerThy will be done;
23px spaceron earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
23px spaceras we forgive those who trespass
23px spaceragainst us.
And lead us not into temptation;
23px spacerbut deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom,
23px spacerthe power and the glory,
23px spacerfor ever and ever.
Amen.

The Collect

Lord Jesus, stay with us,
23px spacerfor evening is at hand
23px spacerand the day is past;
be our companion in the way,
23px spacerkindle our hearts, and awaken hope,
23px spacerthat we may know you
as you are revealed in Scripture
23px spacerand the breaking of bread.
Grant this for the sake
23px spacerof your love.
Amen.
