The Buddha said::
There comes a time when, Vāseṭṭha, after a very long period has passed, this cosmos contracts…. There comes a time when, after a very long period has passed, this cosmos expands (DN 27 Sujato).
Maurice translates it, “this world contracts…. But sooner or later, after a very long period, this world begins to expand again.”
This sounds like a big crunch followed by a big bang. This agrees with the Big Bang Theory in science. The Big Crunch is just one of the theories of physics on how the cosmos will end.
Instead of “this cosmos expands”, Steven Collins translates it as “evolves.” T.W. Rhys Davids and C.A.F. Rhys Davids translate it as “e-evolve.”
The cosmos expanding, of course, implies the idea of evolution. This is clear from the context, where the world becomes re-peopled again.
This is a remarkably advanced view given that it was declared over 2,400 years ago.
