Happy Humanist Day

June 21st is a big day for me. Yes, it is my birthday. Yes, it is the longest day of the year. Yes, it is the summer solstice.

But more importantly, it is world Humanist day. And I am first and foremost a Humanist.

What is Humanism you ask? “Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without supernaturalism, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity” (Manifesto III).

Another definition, from the International Humanist and Ethical Union, states, “Humanism is a democratic and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and it does not accept supernatural views of reality.”

I am a member of the American Humanist Association and encourage you to join today. Happy World Humanist Day!
